The Best of Both Worlds

Sep 26, 2024

After graduating from Illinois State University, Christy Kuechler spent five years working in educational software followed by seven years in the financial services industry. She never imagined her career would eventually take an unexpected turn and lead to deep, personal satisfaction working for The Salvation Army.

“Initially, I had a lot of fun learning about insurance, and wealth management. But as the years went by, it just wasn’t a good fit for me anymore,“ she explained. “I was good at my job, but I didn't find value in it. I needed something with more purpose.”

And then it happened. Christy’s employer tapped into her organizational skills to coordinate their participation in a few local service and fundraising projects. She felt empowered and excited to make a difference in the world. From there, her desire to pursue a mission-based career path started to grow.

“I became a very active volunteer. I wasn’t getting paid, but I knew my efforts were helping people in need, and that was so motivating. That’s when I decided to look for a new job. One that I could feel passionately about,” she said.

Christy started an online job search that brought her to The Salvation Army’s Emergency Disaster Services (EDS) Department. At the time, she had limited knowledge about the extensive services and programs The Salvation Army provides, yet she was confident her skill set would easily transfer. Could this be the best of both worlds?

Fast forward eight years and Christy is still enjoying her role as a Logistics & Grants Specialist at The Salvation Army Central Territory. She reflects fondly on the preparation and short-term recovery efforts she has been involved in. But it’s the long-term recovery, where communities are restored and thriving following a disaster, that gives her the most joy.

“The work I’m doing impacts so many people, and on a much larger scale than I ever imagined. My heart pulled me here for a reason, and I’m happy to serve. My co-workers are so genuine. They really care about one another and the work they do. It’s definitely been a ride, but I’m enjoying it,” she said.
