Where Music and Ministry Intersect
Familiar with The Salvation Army, but not the scope of all its programs and services, Alicia Andes recently heard about an interesting career opportunity from one of her friends. Andes had just decided to return to work after staying home with her twin girls for several years.
“I looked at the job description and was surprised that it included so much of my previous experiences. The role was Administrative Assistant for The Salvation Army Central Territory Music & Creative Arts Ministries,” she explained. “I thought it was a great fit since my career prior to having children was in music administration and I have since enjoyed volunteering with children’s camps and other ministries. But the most enticing part was the idea of using these skills and past experiences to further the Kingdom of God.”
Interestingly, Andes’ family already had a small connection to The Salvation Army. Her mom worked at a Salvation Army girls youth shelter in Honolulu, HI, before she was born, and growing up, she heard many heartwarming stories about the good work that took place there. She also shopped at the Salvation Army Thrift Stores, saw bell ringers outside stores at Christmastime, and recalls the brass ensemble catching her eye.
“I didn’t even know a music department existed in The Salvation Army. But now I know what an important role it played in their history. That makes my job even more meaningful. I particularly enjoy supporting the youth summer camps, and occasionally they ask me to sit in on a performance as a cellist. It’s so nice to be appreciated for a variety of skills I bring to the position,” she said.
Andes acknowledged The Salvation Army embraces everyone, and that her department feels like an extended family. She supports the mission and feels her perspectives are welcome and contribute to the overall success of the team. For those reasons, she encourages others to look at and apply for open roles.
“Even if you think you know what The Salvation Army is all about, take a deeper dive and learn more. There are so many different departments that could use your skills. I’ve found this to be a very family-friendly employer, and I’m happy to be here,” Andes said.
